In this blog, I’ll be going through some helpful tips on how to remain healthy during the hot summer!

Did you know that even living in England we can still get temperatures of up to 30°C it’s really important to ensure that you keep yourself healthy during these spikes of hot weather.

Some useful tips are, keeping yourself hydrated, it’s recommended to drink 6-8 glasses of fluid a day and of course the best fluid you can have is water, especially in this weather. When going out in this hot weather keep a bottle or glass of water to hand to ensure you stay fuelled, it’s also useful to keep a spray bottle with water in to mist yourself with when getting too warm. These methods can help prevent dehydration, if you are concerned someone you know is dehydrated some signs to look for are dark urine, dizzy spells, delirium, confusion and shortness of breath.

Staying out of the sun and avoiding activities that will make you actively sweat profusely. Avoid wearing tight fitting clothing, try to wear light, loose fitting clothing that is breathable. Going to areas with air conditioning can help during extreme heightened weather conditions, fans can help however they can also circulate hot air which would can cause dehydration.

Encourage cool (not cold!) showers/bathing, even wearing a cool flannel, towel or compress around the neck or dabbing on your face throughout the day, especially when going out in the hot sun. Avoid heavy and hot meals where you can, try eating light but healthy and protein rich foods, things like salads, pasta, couscous. Keeping curtains closed on windows which have direct sunlight coming in can help in keeping rooms cool and yourself cool.

Picking up on signs that someone is suffering from heat stroke, you would think someone is suffering with being in the heat too long they would sweat however with heat stroke or heat stress their skin can become very dry, clammy or hot. Further symptoms can include nausea, confusion, delirium, fatigue, high body temperature, dizziness and rapid increase in pulse. Don’t hesitate, phone 999!

Staying healthy during the hot weather is so important, keeping yourself cool and hydrated during the heated months is of pivotal importance to having fun and staying safe in the summer months.
